How to install a patch...

Hi, this may be an easy question but I'm a bit of a beginner with this so I have to ask...
How do you install a patch on to the VoCore?
I'm trying to add SD card support based on this post http://vonger.cn/?p=1637 but I'm wanting to tread carefully as I've already broken my other VoCore (won't successfully boot
).
So far I've managed to update and install packages using opkg, but not sure how to install patches...
As I said this may be trivial but by asking I might be helping out other beginners who are also wondering how to do this.
