Help with TTY connection, error

Wed Dec 28, 2016 3:29 am

I'm trying to connect to Vocore2 by TTY to enable the wifi on my Vocore but I keep getting an error message and I don't know whats going on.

Kermit> connect

As you can see in my thread "is my vocore2 dead? [SOVLED]" I revived it thru a Linux machine for the first time. But since then I go back to my window lap laptop and revive it many times, more than 5 times, all I need is to install usbttl drive from http://vonger.cn/misc/vocore2/tools/usb2ttl.zip then install putty to log on to vocore2 and do reboot, f, firstboot -y, then reboot again as per noblepepper instruction. It took less than 5m to revive it once I remember the sequence.

@Cory - Interesting alternative, I don't think OpenWrt is built with that enabled but I am going to play with the idea to see what is possible.

@rcpaul - What you can do is press [Enter] to bring up the banner and command prompt (it will be hidden in the garbage)
Then type rmmod mtk-sd, you have to do it blindly while garbage continues. It may take two or three tries. This will usually stop the garbage but I have had times it would not.

If you can't stop the garbage it looks like you can get into u-boot so you should use that to load the 20161224.bin image, go ahead and download it to your computer.

If you are on an Airplay (this shouldn't happen on an Ultimate) use the USB Storage option.

If you are on a bare board, you are stuck with the serial load option (0 on the menu). At 115200 baud this is very slow, you will need to be patient. For a bare board I have been very lucky using a PL2303 based USB/UART at 460800 baud and it takes less than 5 minutes. This isn't guaranteed, but give it a try. Here's how:

On the u-boot menu take option 4:
Code: Select all

VoCore2 >

Set the baudrate to 460800:
Code: Select all
VoCore2 > setenv baudrate 460800
## Switch baudrate to 460800 bps and press ENTER ...

Use [ctrl]\ c to get out to kermit's command line, change the speed and reconnect and press [Enter] like u-boot asked:

Code: Select all
(Back at elbono-bigguy.elbono.com)
----------------------------------------------------
Kermit> set speed 460800
/dev/ttyUSB1, 460800 bps
Kermit> connect
Connecting to /dev/ttyUSB1, speed 460800
Escape character: Ctrl-\ (ASCII 28, FS): enabled
Type the escape character followed by C to get back,
or followed by ? to see other options.
----------------------------------------------------
VoCore2 >

u-boot is using the last [Enter] to detect that you changed speed in Kermit. If it doesn't get it at the correct baudrate you just power cycle and go about your business at 115200.

Now save the new speed so u-boot will continue to use it when you reboot:
Code: Select all
VoCore2 > saveenv
Saving Environment to SPI Flash...
Erasing SPI Flash...
.
Writing to SPI Flash...
.
done
VoCore2 >

Don't forget this step or you'll be back at 115200 when you reboot (I usually forget and have to do it all again)

Now reboot and follow the normal instructions for loading over serial using option 0:
Code: Select all
VoCore2 > reset

noblepepper I can get into the command prompt, what is the easiest way to enable the wifi?

I tired changing the baud rate but it didn't work for me so I'm hoping to enable the wifi and load the firmware with Luci.

I think using the serial upload in u-boot will be your easiest option even if you use 115200 baud, it just takes longer.

If you want to do it from where you are you need /etc/config/wireless to look like this:
Code: Select all
config wifi-device 'radio0'
   option type 'ralink'
   option variant 'mt7628'
   option country 'CN'
   option hwmode '11g'
   option htmode 'HT40'
   option channel 'auto'
   option disabled '0'

config wifi-iface 'ap'
   option device 'radio0'
   option mode 'ap'
   option network 'lan'
   option ifname 'ra0'
   option ssid 'VoCore2'
   option encryption 'none'

config wifi-iface 'sta'
   option device 'radio0'
   option mode 'sta'
   option network 'wwan'
   option ifname 'apcli0'
   option led 'mediatek:orange:wifi'
   option ssid 'UplinkAp'
   option key 'SecretKey'
   option encryption 'psk'
   option disabled '1'

Then restart the network:
Code: Select all
root@OpenWrt:/# /etc/init.d/network restart
[  393.870000] br-lan: port 2(ra0) entered disabled state
[  393.880000] br-lan: port 1(eth0.1) entered disabled state
[  393.890000] device eth0.1 left promiscuous mode
[  393.890000] br-lan: port 1(eth0.1) entered disabled state
[  393.900000] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0.1: link is not ready
[  393.930000] device ra0 left promiscuous mode
[  393.930000] br-lan: port 2(ra0) entered disabled state
[  394.160000] device eth0 left promiscuous mode
root@OpenWrt:/# [  395.960000] device eth0.1 entered promiscuous mode
[  395.960000] device eth0 entered promiscuous mode
[  395.980000] br-lan: port 1(eth0.1) entered forwarding state
[  395.980000] br-lan: port 1(eth0.1) entered forwarding state
[  396.770000] device ra0 entered promiscuous mode
[  396.770000] br-lan: port 2(ra0) entered forwarding state
[  396.780000] br-lan: port 2(ra0) entered forwarding state
[  397.980000] br-lan: port 1(eth0.1) entered forwarding state
[  398.780000] br-lan: port 2(ra0) entered forwarding state
.

The VoCore2 AP should be up, connect to it.

You should be able to find Luci at 192.168.61.1 with your web browser, use it to upload 20161224.bin make sure the keep settings box is NOT checked.

You should come back up with a VoCore2 ready to configure without all the aggravating "no support for card volts" crap and with the latest firmware.

Now follow the instructions for "Setup AP + STA Mode" on the product page. Vonger has changed them, much easier to follow now.

It came through, I'm not impressed with phpBB's PM module it does funky things.

Make sure you have Allow users to send you private messages: set to Yes. It is under Board preferences in the User Control panel.
