VoCore2 Lite Monitor Mode

Thu Jan 19, 2017 8:17 pm

Hi. Has anyone had success setting VoCore2 Lite in monitor mode for wireless packet capture?

airmon-ng reports that chipset is Ralink 2560 PCI rt2500.

aircrack compatibility tables says that "The entire rt2x00 family: rt2400pci, rt2500pci, rt2500usb, rt2800pci and rt2800usb can inject and monitor. Including PCI and USB chips on b/g/n".
http://www.aircrack-ng.org/doku.php?id=compatibility_drivers&DokuWiki=c4a36903831ab7b2c40874416f5f8ea6#compatibility

Seems like it should work. If I try to start capture on airmon-ng, it will say "monitor mode enabled" but iwconfig reports that it is still in "Managed" mode.
Code: Select all
root@OpenWrt:~# airmon-ng start ra0
Interface       Chipset         Driver
ra0             Ralink 2560 PCI rt2500 (monitor mode enabled)

eth0.2    no wireless extensions.

Not an expert on chipsets and drivers, but maybe it is related to missing nl80211?
Code: Select all
root@OpenWrt:~# iw dev ra0 info
nl80211 not found.

System is Linux OpenWrt 3.18.29 #32 Sat Dec 24 22:01:05 CST 2016 mips GNU/Linux with VoCore firmware from 20161224.

Thanks.

I don't own a VoCore2 yet, but I would if it supported monitor mode.

Maybe all of the extra wifi-ifaces are confusing airmon-ng?

Can you try simplifying /etc/config/wireless till there is just ra0 (then rebooting) and trying again?

On some chipsets I've seen, you don't need to even use airmon-ng at all, simply starting airodump-ng on the interface itself is fine and airodump will put it into monitor mode for you (iwconfig ra0 mode montior). Maybe try that seeing if airodump-ng will do it for you anyway? (after simplifying it to just have 1 interface)

LEDE opensource driver support monitor mode.

Please, can anyone confirm LEDE is supporting MT7628 drivers?
According to the other thread, LEDE does not enable wifi interface.
