VoCore2 keeps rebooting, seems broken

Thu Jan 26, 2017 8:18 am

Hi All,

Received my VoCore2 last week and went straight trying it. In the beginning all seems OK. I even got it connected to my home wifi. Because I had some issues with the MAC addresses of the bridge interface (my Juniper router was learning the interface MAC, while the VoCore's IP (dhcp) was on the bridge). Then I made some network configuration change through the GUI and then I was unable to reach it anymore. Then I managed to connect to it by console. I noticed that it was rebooting all the time. Yesterday I managed to boot in failsafe mode, which seems to prevent the rebooting. Then I was able to connect a USB drive with the lastest bin file (20161224.bin); I then copied the file to /tmp/20161224.bin and did a full re-install as mentioned on this website: mtd -e firmware write /tmp/20161224.bin firmware
Then after 30min it was still at "Erasing firmware":
root@(none):~# mtd -e firmware write /tmp/20161224.bin firmware
Unlocking firmware ...
Erasing firmware ...

Even console didn't respond anymore so I reboot it, which of course I expected not to work:

## Booting image at bc050000 ...
Bad Magic Number,FFFFFFFF

So I executed the steps under "Fix Bricked VoCore2 (uboot alive)", this worked as far that it did boot again. But unfortunately it didn't help to prevent the rebooting.
Full bootlog not attached because I'm unable to attach .txt/.log files, from the moment I started the recover procedure with kermit So I'll post it below. After flashing, it does a soft reset and the boot starts, all the way to the end (hostname). Then after couple of seconds it says done and starts the restart. That specific part is shown below:

After that it's back at the ralink uboot and all starts over again.
I hope someone can help me in finding the solution, because it made me not being able to use this great device from the moment I received it.

The firmware is broken, please follow vocore.io/v2, recover bricked vocore2.

Hi Vonger,

Thanks for taking the time to reply. As mentioned I've already executed the steps under 'Fix Bricked VoCore2 (uboot alive)'. However still had this problem.
But I'll try again as I see that "vocore.io/v2" redirects to http://vocore.io/v2u.html, but the MD5 is both the same for http://vonger.cn/misc/vocore2/20161224.bin
I'll report back the results.

Onno.

Looks like the factory section on vocore2 is broken. so wireless can not load itself, it reboot.
Weird, do you erase the hole flash? or replace the flash?

Please check:

1. check if you have a stable power source for VoCore2. If power is not very stable, when wifi up it will draw a lot of current, cause vocore2 reboot.
2. in safe mode(press f before it boot), call hexdump -C /dev/mtd2, check if factory setting is correct(paste it here)
3. maybe something reboot it in user section, in safe mode, call firstboot -y, try to recover.

Hi Vonger,

I've just reloaded the firmware; As there are no instructions on how to load the *.img (flash) file.
I replaced the power source with a 5.1V/2A source, which should provide enough power. It boots again, until suddenly it says:

[ 17.540000] NET: Registered protocol family 24
[ 24.160000] device eth0.1 entered promiscuous mode
[ 24.170000] device eth0 entered promiscuous mode

[ 26.030000] tssi_1_target_pwr_g_band = 35
*** Warning - bad CRC, using default environment

and then it reboots.

So on your request I rebooted it to safe mode to get the hexdump:
root@(none):/# hexdump -C /dev/mtd2

Then I also ran the 'firstboot -y' command, without succes. It seems like the wifi seems to trigger something, bad memory part of something, which is causing the reboot. When I boot in safe mode, which doesn't seem to start wifi, it doesn't reboot.

Regards,
Onno.

You might need to change a USB cable. It is still power issue.

*** Warning - bad CRC, using default environment
As I remember this log is from uboot, it is normal, just ignore it.
What is the log following this Warning?

Hi Vonger,

Ok, so I got it working a lot more stable. Yet replaced the power source again (I already had replaced source and USB cable before), but it also seems one of the two 5V connections I connected to the VoCore was a bit flaky.
Now even got my rebuilded version of the vocore openwrt bin working (needed the cp210x kernel mod, which didn't install with the opkg command, kernel version dependency mismatch).

Earlier you said: "so wireless can not load itself, it reboot."
Do you mean that it's going to reboot when it's unable to connect to my wifi network? If so, why not just restart networking?

Onno.

When VoCore2 wifi up, it draws a lot of current, suddenly from 100mA to around 500~600mA in 100ms, if your power source is not stable, it can not draw enough current, then it will reboot.
Once wifi is up, it only require around 140mA.

Hi Vonger,

Awesome, thanks for the explanation. It's working stable for the last few hours so I'm happy and even got the additional uarts working which I need for my project. Came across this article: http://vonger.cn/?p=1409 and works perfectly. Thanks again and I'll guess I might order one or two more ;o)

Thanks!
Onno.
