Using Vocore2 Ultimate as a Programmer like Bus Pirate?

Wed Nov 23, 2022 4:04 am

Hi all, I have an HDMI TV stick which is almost the same as the one in this page:

https://github.com/yuvadm/rockcast

I want to do the same as what this guy does, using Flashrom to dump the firmware from the stick's flash storage.

He used a Bus Pirate, but he wasn't clear about which bus/interface was he using (SPI? UART?).

Needless to say, I don't have one (Bus Pirate). However, I saw what another guy did at https://www.rototron.info/recover-bricked-bios-using-flashrom-on-a-raspberry-pi/, and he used a Raspberry Pi instead.

  • Can I do the same (dumping my TV stick's firmware) using my VoCore2 Ultimate? (Let's just assume that I know which specific bus/interface to use, say SPI)
  • If the answer is "yes", which programmer should I tell flashrom? Is it flashrom -p linux_spi like the Raspberry guy?

VoCore do not have HDMI, so it can not make TV stick

Hi, I'm not trying to flash vocore's firmware to the TV stick,
I want to unbrick the TV stick using my vocore2 ultimate board
So, please look at the image below, my TV stick is equivalent to the right side "Bricked VoCore2":

But also I want to dump the firmware of the TV stick first, like this link:
https://www.rototron.info/recover-bricked-bios-using-flashrom-on-a-raspberry-pi/
And I want to use my vocore2 ultimate instead of Raspberry Pi

Oh, if you just need use SPI to dump some flash data out, it can use VoCore2.
You will need to use bitbang version SPI driver(official driver did not detours the hardware bug), then there are many way to get data from SPI. Like the picture, the most simple way is the same way as upgrade a bricked VoCore.

Return to VoCore2/Lite/Ultimate
